Séverine Morfin – viola, effets, compositions
Malik Ziad – mandole, guembri, banjo, compositions
They met while improvising on Gnaoua trance rhythms on tour with singer Piers Faccini. Born in Algiers, self-taught musician, Malik Ziad is passionate about stringed instruments, and more particularly for the traditional ones of his country: guembri and mandola. In Algeria, he immersed himself in the exalted rhythms of the Gnawa and popular Chaâbi music.
In this duo, through improvisation, the relationship with sound, but also a form of transcendence, the two musicians unite as if they had known each other since ancient times. The viola, which is also found in chaabi music, is resolutely contemporary here, but connects naturally to the other strings, creating a completely new instrumentarium, just like its repertoire.
